Cartoon Network picks up the Ghibli library.
Earlier this month, Turner Classic Movies (sister network of Cartoon
Network) started a month-long tribute to the legendary anime director, Hayao
Miyazaki, and his company, Studio Ghibli. (They've been airing every
Thursday night this month.)
Well, TCM has given CN the rights to the Ghibli movies! The first of the
films, Spirited Away, airs on the Fridays block on February 3 at 7PM.
There's no scheduled listings yet for the rest of the films.

If no one has yet seen a Hayao Miyazaki or a Studio Ghibli anime, they ARE
the best animated films coming out of Japan nowadays, or for the last 15
years or more. While some like Princess Mononoke are too violent and mature
for early hours, it would fit in great on adult swim. AND if they show Porco
Rosso, DON'T MISS IT!!!
BTW, TCM still has 2 more films this Thursday 1/26, "Only Yesterday" a more
serious anime drama about a 27 year old office lady reminiscing about her
childhood and lost dreams while visiting her sister's farm. and
light-hearted "Pom Poko" about magical shapeshifting Raccoons protecting
their forest homes form urban development. This will be the first time on
US TV for both and will be shown first in English dubs and a second time in
Subtitled Japanese later on the same night.
BTW #2, I know this is only Semi OT, or maybe even just OT in some peoples
opinion (Derek) and I'm sure they (Derek) will point this out to me, and
then make some sort of royal decree about crossposting (Derek) and issue his
verdict about where this should or should not be post. (Derek)
BUT (IMO) Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's films might appeal to users of
these newsgroups. His
movies have a wonderful child-like sense of magic and adventure like the
Potter books and films, yet at the same time can reach a level of
sophistication and plot depth take might be of interest to a Tolkien fan. I
thought that many members of both these groups might already be fans, or
might become interested in them due to being for fans of popular fantasy
book/films similar in style (IMO) to many Studio Ghibli Films.
And as for the Current-Films newsgroup, these ARE current films, some never
before available in the US marketplace, only in region II DVD's from Japan
or illegal downloads. This is also the first showings on US TV from most of
Studio Ghibli films as well.
PS: All the dubs where done by Disney, who owns the US rights to Studio
Ghibli films.
